asana is not yoga

The misunderstandings about what yoga is and the pursuit of Western ideas of the body inscribed within asana is a cause for concern and call for analysis and evaluation. The tendency amongst many students who practice asana to pursue deeper and more difficult forms is antithetic to yoga and often leads to injury. The most glaring confusion is that asana equals the totality of yoga rather than a necessary part of a comprehensive practice that makes being embodied more tolerable. The practice of asana can improve integration and awareness within the body and provide direct experiences of transparency, stillness and motion – these are entry points for meditation.
