Laser and LED therapy

Osteopaths can be luddites, inherently skeptical of electrotherapuetic devices.  I have dabbled with some, but my most enduring fascination has been with laser and LED therapy. The therapeutic use of red and near infra-red is referred to as Photobiomodulation Therapy (PBMt).

Over the last 40+ years, basic research and clinical studies have conclusively established the therapeutic efficacy PBMt.

Biphasic dose response in low level light therapy

PBMt has been demonstrated to

– accelerate the healing of soft tissue injuries and wounds
– relieve acute and chronic pain
– reduce inflammation
– promote healing by increasing cellular energy production and vasodilation (opening blood vessels)
– enhance physical performance and recovery

The treatment of neck, jaw (TMJ) and low back pain are supported by the strongest level of evidence. There is also, considerable interest in the use of PBMt to treat neuroinflammatory conditions, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s disease and traumatic brain injuries.

PBMt is synergistic with osteopathy. PBMt changes the biological scale of treatment. Hands-on osteopathy influences the tissues of the body whilst PBMt directly influences molecular, cellular and physiological functions like inflammation and tissue repair.

Biphasic dose response in low level light therapy

Osteopathy Cobargo is pleased to be able to offer Laser & LED therapy. Osteopathy Cobargo will use PBMt to treat musculoskeletal conditions including:

– occupational overuse
– tendinopathies (e.g. gluteus medius, Achilles, supraspinatus, and plantar fasciitis)
– chronic muscular tension and pain
– acute/chronic injury and pain
– post-orthopaedic/surgical pain, inflammation and healing.

PBMt has a cumulative dosage effect, in practical terms this means that you will need 2-3 treatments per week. The number of treatments required to produce a significant clinical effect varies tremendously, but the established reference range is 6-12 treatments.

To map out a course of PBMt treatments, your initial PBMt treatment will be incorporated into a typical osteopathic session. Subsequent dedicated PBMt sessions – will be shorter in duration to achieve the necessary treatment frequency. To make an appointment for osteopathic treatment incorporating PMBt, simply use the online booking form and select Initial (for new patients) or Standard treatment (for existing patients).

As a registered healthcare practitioner I have undertaken safety and technical training with the Australian Medical Laser Association.
